castle kosatky and its last family of nobles

the castle kosatky- my mother's birthplace and home to my grand parents, mother, my two aunts, the maids, dogs, horses, and the ghost mother searching for her child.

It was the retreat for the pre and post World War Two Czech Psychic and Intellectual Circle formed by my grandfather Baron Otokar Capek and his business, partner,publisher, and teacher, Jewish ascetic Karl Weinfurter.

Weinfurter's wife, Bosena, was my grand father's life love and soul mate. It seems, married to Weinfurter, Bosena was also my grandfather's lover and this relationship was condoned by all adults affected. My grandfather later married Bosena after the War.

I am sure my grandmother Maria Capkova was desperately hurt by what seemed to be a betrayal of love and marriage. My mother up returning to the castle in 2002, two years before her death, was bluntly pained by the truths I just described. She had idolized my grandfather but knew little of him.

His relationship with Bosena harmed the women of the family, and I, although understanding my grandfather and perhaps supporting his decision to live, cannot understand his neglect of his daughters, and lack of sensitivity for my grandmother.

My mother remembers as a little girl, watching my grandmother sit at a mirror and seeing in its reflection, my grandfather hugging and kissing Bosena. My mother didn't understand until 2002, that my grandfather had been in love with someone else.

noble memory and arrogance

The book summary for Masters of Memory: The Strategic Use of Autobiographical Memory by the German Nobility MARCUS FUNCK AND STEPHAN MALINOWSKI: The Nobility's Culture of Memory highlights what I know to be truth herrentum (noble truth) : the family did maintain rigorous standards for breed refinement. Whether pruning a bloodline in dogs and horses, or directing behaviors in their offspring, the aristocrat's position demanded constant self-refinement to presumedly support their importance.

My mother was a well-trained noble, and as described in this essay, she too looked upon her loss of homeland, family, title, and love of life, with an unfortunate bitter sadness.
